Our Mission

Across the towns of  Rangeley and Oquossoc, and including the 4 Plantations of Dallas, Sandy River, Rangeley, and Coplin, there are elderly people, widows, single parents, and many others who could benefit from a bit of help. Founder of SFCF, Craig Sargent, recognized this need for assistance and decided to do something about it.

The Sargent Family Community Fund was founded to benefit the people who do not have the means they need to live at an optimal level. Since our creation, the SFCF’s goal has been to help people in need through financial assistance, volunteer labor, food donations and much more.

Action & Results are What Motivate Us!

Since the original concept was launched in 2010, and known then as ‘Friends Helping Friends”, there have been a total of 30 J1D projects completed through year-end 2024. In 2020 Mr. Sargent, seeing how beneficial this work was to the greater communities and wanting to assure the people and organizations that were so integral to the success be able to deduct their donations, formalized the legal non-profit called the Sargent Family Community Fund. Thus providing a mechanism to allow his vision and mission to be carried well into the future.

Craig Sargent, and his wife Sharon, have personally funded the SFCF annually and with the combined generous contributions of all donors (private, corporate, and local) have raised approximately $1M in donations through 2024. All monies go directly to the projects. All project recipients are nominated by others.

As an example, in 2024, the Sargent Family Community Fund took part in five renovation projects for people in need. This could not be accomplished without the amazing support and contributions from people and businesses locally, regionally, and nationally. Along with many local and regional contractors and insurance companies, two of the area’s local banks have been participants from the start. Both Skowhegan Savings Bank and Franklin Savings Bank have generously donated their support for this community effort through both dollars and volunteer labor.

Volunteer Financial Impact

During the annual J1D event, an average of 75 volunteers, comprised of both professional contractors and interested non-contractor labor, attend and donate their work. This represents an average of 600 volunteer hours per year with a resulting value of approximately $30,000 of donated annual labor. Through 2024, that represents nearly a half million dollars in donated labor! As explained above, all materials are provided by the fund for this day and for the duration of the projects. After the volunteer day, all contractor labor is paid for by the fund.

SFCF Supports the Communities in Other Ways

In addition to the impact that Just One Day has had on the lives of families who have received this service, SFCF also supports other community needs such as:

  • Regular co-sponsorship for the fireworks display for the 4th of July celebration,
  • Provides heating assistance of oil or propane to people throughout the served communities
  • Assists when needed with fruits and vegetables at the local school (RSU #78)
  • Sponsors and provides land for local community gardens
  • Has given financial support for the development and building of the new Beth Brunswick Memorial Fund Daycare Center (project commenced in 2024)

SFCF could not do this without the amazing support and contributions from people and businesses in our community, other non-profit organizations aligned with our mission, regional and national financial institutions and insurance companies.
